Why High-Dosage Tutoring Is a Game-Changer

High-dosage tutoring—defined as individualized instruction delivered at least 3 times per week—is one of the most effective interventions in K–12 education today. Students experience:

1. +0.3 to +0.4 standard deviation gains in math and reading—equal to 3–15 months of extra learning

finance

2. 49% fewer course failures in high school math (Saga Education)

rubric

3. Up to +0.74 SD literacy gains in K–1 students with daily one-on-one reading sessions

At Score At The Top, we bring this evidence to life with a personalized approach:

  • Minimum 2–3 sessions per week for sustained learning gains

  • 1:1 instruction with the same tutor to build consistency and trust

  • Integration with school curriculum + progress monitoring

  • Individualized support for math, reading, writing, AP, ESL, and more

 Frequently-Asked Questions

  • Score At The Top provides expert tutoring across virtually every academic subject area — from elementary-level reading and math through advanced high school and college coursework. This includes English, math, science (biology, chemistry, physics), social studies, foreign languages, and AP/IB-level classes. We also offer targeted test-prep tutoring for standardized exams such as the SAT, ACT, PSAT, SSAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and TOEFL.

  • Tutoring begins with a personalized intake process. The Learning Center Director gathers detailed information about the student’s academic background, learning style, goals, and challenges.

    From there:

    1. A qualified tutor is matched to the student.

    2. A customized plan is created, emphasizing academic improvement, motivation, and study skills.

    3. The tutor continuously adapts instruction based on progress, classroom performance, and parent feedback.

We do not use pre-packaged programs — every student receives individualized instruction designed to produce measurable, lasting results.

  • We tutor students of all ages, from elementary and middle school through high school, college, and adult learners. Whether the goal is foundational skill-building, enrichment, or college-level coursework, our tutors provide age-appropriate instruction and mentoring.

  • Score At The Top offers both in-person tutoring at our learning centers, and online tutoring through virtual platforms, like Zoom. Each approach uses the same individualized structure, curriculum alignment, and tutor quality standards.

  • All tutors undergo a rigorous selection and training process:

    • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree (many hold master’s or doctoral degrees).

    • Comprehensive interview, reference verification, and background check before hire.

    • Orientation and ongoing professional development to ensure every tutor meets Score At The Top’s standards.

For test-prep roles, tutors must score in the top 5% on the SAT or ACT and demonstrate mastery of the material before working with students. Test prep tutors actually complete every test a student is asked to take so they can be sure to answer questions from personal knowledge, not from a book.

  • Progress is monitored and documented through our learning management system, LearnSpeed:

    • Tutors enter detailed session notes, typically within 24 hours, of each session.

    • Learning Center Directors review all notes daily (including weekends) for accuracy and progress tracking.

    • Parents receive regular updates and are contacted after the first week of tutoring, and periodically thereafter, to ensure satisfaction and that we’re staying on the right track.

    • Learning Center Directors proactively reach out if changes in the student’s plan are needed.

  • Tutoring sessions typically last one to two hours depending on the subject and goal.

    Our recommended frequency:

    • A/B students: 1–2 sessions per week

    • C students: 2 sessions per week

    • D students: 3 sessions per week

    • F students: 4 sessions per week (or, consider retaking the class in our accredited school, Score Academy).

For study skills or test-taking improvement, at least two sessions per week are essential for measurable progress. Standing weekly appointments are strongly encouraged for consistency (and to make sure you have your tutor when you need him/her).

  • While traditional tutoring focuses on improving knowledge in a specific subject, academic coaching targets broader academic success. Coaches address:

    • Time management and organization

    • Study strategies and test-taking habits

    • Motivation and accountability

Academic coaching helps students “learn how to learn,” improve independence, and reduce school-related stress at home. Parents frequently report that “the arguing over homework ceases” once coaching begins.

  • Tutors personalize instruction to each student’s unique learning profile. During intake, we identify whether a student learns best by means of visual, auditory, or kinesthetic approaches. Lesson pacing, materials, and teaching style are adjusted accordingly. For students with ADHD or learning differences, tutors incorporate specialized strategies and may collaborate with the student’s teachers or learning specialists to align support.

  • The matching process is a critical part of our success:

    1. Through our intake process, Learning Center Directors review the student’s academic history, learning style, and personality.

    2. Tutor qualifications, experience, and teaching approach are matched to those needs.

    3. Parent input and prior tutoring experiences are considered when assigning staff.

Whenever possible, we also weigh personality fit to ensure the student connects well with his/her tutor—a key factor in motivation and long-term success.

  • Our tutors function not just as instructors, but also as academic coaches, mentors, and cheerleaders. They help students develop systems for managing time, setting priorities, and maintaining accountability. Through consistent structure and positive reinforcement, students learn how to plan assignments, avoid procrastination, and take ownership of their learning.

Tutors also use motivational strategies designed to inspire student engagement and confidence, fostering small, steady wins that lead to meaningful improvement in performance and attitude.

  • We teach students how to learn, not just what to learn. Tutoring integrates subject-matter instruction with executive-function coaching — organization, note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management.

Students develop transferable skills that extend beyond a single class, allowing them to become independent, confident learners. The consistent feedback loop between tutor, student, and parent ensures that progress translates into stronger study habits and self-esteem.

  • Both — but always with purpose. We view “homework help” as an opportunity to teach strategy and independence, not simply to complete assignments. Tutors guide students through problem-solving processes, reinforce underlying concepts, and model effective study techniques.

For students with multiple academic struggles, we also offer daily academic coaching sessions or structured study-hall time, allowing them to complete work under professional supervision and eliminate at-home stress.

  • We work closely with students who have learning differences, ADHD, or executive-function challenges. During the intake process, families are asked to share psychoeducational evaluations, IEPs, or 504 Plans so that we can tailor instruction accordingly.

Tutors employ multisensory, structured, and paced teaching strategies that align with each student’s cognitive profile. When appropriate, we coordinate with teachers, therapists, or educational psychologists to maintain consistency across learning environments.

  • Families typically see measurable improvements in academic performance, motivation, and confidence. Students experience:

    • Higher grades and test scores

    • Increased organization and productivity

    • Greater independence and engagement in learning

    • Reduced homework stress and stronger study habits

For test-prep students, average score increases are 100–150 points (SAT) and 3–4 points (ACT) — results achieved through consistency and individualized instruction.

  • Students in advanced programs receive tutoring that emphasizes analytical thinking, time management, and subject-specific depth. We match these students with tutors experienced in AP/IB/AICE curricula and familiar with the pacing, rigor, and exam structures of those programs.

Tutors may integrate past AP/IB/AICE exam questions, college-level reading materials, or supplemental enrichment tasks to challenge students appropriately.

  • Unlike franchise or “cookie-cutter” tutoring services, Score At The Top delivers relationship-driven, fully individualized instruction. Each student’s program is designed from the ground up — continuously adapted based on progress and feedback.

    Key differentiators include:

    • All tutors are professionals with advanced degrees and proven teaching expertise.

    • Learning Center Directors review daily session notes to ensure quality and consistency.

    • Parents receive personal communication and data-driven updates.

    • Curriculum flexibility allows us to address classroom content, test preparation, and long-term skill development simultaneously.

Our math tutors help students strengthen conceptual understanding, improve problem-solving skills, and develop confidence through structured, personalized instruction. Lessons are aligned with each student’s current school curriculum, and enrichment opportunities are available for accelerated learners.

  • Our reading and writing instruction is designed to meet students at their current level and build strong comprehension, fluency, and expression. Tutors emphasize active reading, vocabulary development, and written communication skills.

We also teach grammar, structure, transitions, and analytical writing techniques that help students excel in both classroom assignments and standardized tests. We also employ several instructors with specialized degrees and training in various ESE programs.

  • Absolutely. We offer tutoring in all major science disciplines — including general science, biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, and AP/IB/AICE-level courses.

Our science tutors focus on conceptual mastery, laboratory comprehension, and test preparation. For students struggling with analytical reasoning or math-based components of science courses, we integrate quantitative problem-solving strategies to reinforce understanding.

  • Yes. We provide tutoring in popular foreign languages such as Spanish, French, Latin, and Mandarin (and, sometimes additional languages). Tutors work on grammar, vocabulary, conversation, listening comprehension, and writing.

Instruction may also support AP or IB foreign language courses and cultural components when applicable. Sessions can be structured around a student’s school curriculum or used for enrichment and fluency building.

  • Yes — our test-prep programs are among the most comprehensive in the country.

    Highlights include:

    • Proprietary SAT/ACT strategies developed by Judi Robinovitz, one of the authors of the College Board’s first official SAT prep book and software.

    • Tutors who have scored in the top 5% on the SAT or ACT and undergo specialized training.

    • Instruction using mostly real, previously administered tests — and, when we need to utilize supplemental materials, we only employ the best.

    • Free, proctored test simulations to build familiarity and endurance.

    • Typical results: 100–150-point SAT gains and 3–4-point ACT gains, well above national averages.

We also offer preparation for exams such as the PSAT, SSAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, TOEFL, and others.

  • Yes. We provide academic support for college students and adult learners, including assistance in writing, mathematics, science, and executive-function coaching.

Our tutors help students adapt to the higher expectations of college coursework — emphasizing independence, critical thinking, and time management. Many college students also work with us to prepare for graduate admissions tests or to strengthen foundational study skills for demanding programs.

  • Getting started is simple. Contact your nearest Score At The Top center by phone or through our website to speak directly with a Learning Center Director.

During that initial call, we will:

    1. Conduct a detailed intake interview about your child’s needs, goals, and learning background.

    2. Collect relevant academic information (grades, assignments, test results, and any IEP/504 documentation).

    3. Recommend the most effective tutoring plan, including frequency and tutor match.

Once you’re ready to begin, we’ll send an electronic Payment Authorization Form (PAF) via secure link for digital signature, confirm your student’s schedule, and welcome you into our system.

Most families can begin tutoring within just a few days.

  • At the first session, the tutor assesses the student’s current performance level and establishes rapport — a key part of our individualized approach.

    The session typically includes:

    • Review of school materials (assignments, tests, or notes).

    • Diagnostic questioning or brief evaluation to identify strengths and challenges.

    • Initial instruction or skill review tailored to the student’s needs.

Parents are encouraged to check in briefly at the start or end of the session. Afterward, the Learning Center Director follows up to ensure satisfaction and confirm that the match is successful.

  • Evaluation begins with the intake process, which gathers comprehensive information about the student’s performance, learning style, and motivation. Tutors and Learning Center Directors review:

    • Current grades and teacher feedback

    • Test results or prior evaluations (including psychoeducational testing, if applicable)

    • Observations from the first few tutoring sessions

Tutors document ongoing progress in our LMS[EE1] , LearnSpeed, allowing Learning Center Directors and parents to see measurable improvement over time.

  • Tutoring goals are collaboratively set at the start of services and refined as progress continues. Learning Center Directors and tutors establish clear, realistic objectives such as improving test scores, strengthening specific skills, or raising grades.

    Progress is measured through:

    • Regular session documentation in our LMS, LearnSpeed

    • Periodic parent check-ins

    • Benchmark assessments or classroom performance reviews

This data-driven approach ensures transparency, accountability, and continuous alignment with student goals.

  • Yes — with advance notice. Score At The Top maintains a 24-hour cancellation policy for non-emergency schedule changes. Families who cancel at least 24 hours ahead can reschedule or make up sessions without penalty.

Because consistency is critical to progress, standing weekly appointments are strongly encouraged. Frequent or last-minute cancellations may result in lost time slots or charges for the missed session.

  • With parent permission, we coordinate directly with a student’s teachers, counselors, or learning specialists to align tutoring goals with classroom expectations. But please manage your expectations, because every teacher has a different level of responsiveness.

This collaboration ensures consistency in instruction and allows us to reinforce school-based objectives, monitor progress, and address specific feedback from the student’s educators.

  • Yes. Tutoring continues throughout the entire year — including summer, holidays, and school breaks. Virtually all instructors at Score have a key to the building, so as long as they’re willing to tutor, we’re open!

Summer is a popular time for students to:

    • Get a jumpstart on next year’s challenging subjects

    • Catch up on missed concepts

    • Prepare for standardized tests

    • Complete credit-bearing courses or enrichment programs

Learning Center Directors can recommend the best summer plan based on each student’s goals and schedule.

  • Tutoring fees vary depending on the subject area, level of instruction, and tutor qualifications. Most sessions are billed on an hourly basis.

Because all tutoring is customized and conducted by experienced, highly qualified professionals, rates reflect the level of individualized attention and expertise provided. The Learning Center Director will review current rates during your intake call and provide a detailed quote before scheduling begins.

  • We offer both hourly tutoring and prepaid package options for convenience and flexibility.

Most families choose our pay-as-you-go model, where a credit card is securely filed and charged after each session. Prepaid packages may also be available for families who prefer to pay for a set number of hours in advance or wish to receive a small courtesy discount.

Session receipts are automatically emailed after each charge for transparency and recordkeeping.

  • Yes. We offer several ways for families to save:

    • Group Sessions: If two or more students are tutored together in the same subject, each student receives a 20% per-hour discount.

    • Referral Credit: Families who refer another student receive a $50 credit toward future services.

For test-prep workshops, families can also receive a $150 discount for referring a friend who enrolls in the same workshop.

  • No long-term contract is required. Our tutoring is flexible and commitment-free — families can begin and end services at any time.

However, we strongly recommend standing weekly appointments to ensure consistency and the best results. Courses taken for academic credit or test-prep workshops require by design a fixed number of hours or sessions.

  • We maintain a 24-hour cancellation policy for all tutoring sessions.

    • Cancellations made with at least 24 hours’ notice may be rescheduled at no cost.

    • Late cancellations or no-shows are charged the full session fee unless there was a verifiable emergency.

    • The first late cancellation is typically excused as a courtesy; subsequent ones are billed in full.

Refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis. For prepaid packages or workshops, unused sessions may be credited toward future services at our discretion.

  • Every Score At The Top tutor is a highly qualified academic professional with strong educational credentials and teaching experience.

    • All tutors hold at least a bachelor’s degree, and many possess master’s or doctoral degrees in their fields.

    • Many have teaching certifications or extensive classroom experience.

    • All undergo a comprehensive background check, reference verification, and in-depth interview process before hire.

Our tutors are selected not only for their subject mastery but also for their ability to connect with students, motivate them, and teach complex material in a clear, relatable way.

  • Our team includes both certified teachers and subject-matter experts. Many of our tutors are current or former classroom educators, while others hold advanced academic degrees in specialized disciplines such as mathematics, science, or foreign languages.

All tutors demonstrate exceptional communication skills and a genuine passion for education — qualities we prioritize as much as credentials. For standardized test prep, tutors must achieve top 5% scores on the SAT or ACT before working with students.

  • Yes. Tutor development is an ongoing process at Score At The Top.

    • Tutors receive an orientation and one-on-one training upon hire covering our instructional methods, our LMS, LearnSpeed, and student engagement standards.

    • All staff participate in professional development meetings at least twice per year to expand their teaching skills.

    • Learning Center Directors review daily session notes, meet regularly with tutors to discuss student progress, and provide individualized coaching and feedback.

This continual supervision ensures that each tutor maintains our standards of excellence and consistent results.

  • Quality assurance is built into our daily operations.

    • Every tutoring session is documented in our LMS, LearnSpeed, where tutors record notes, goals, and student outcomes within 24 hours.

    • Learning Center Directors review all notes daily — including weekends — to ensure accuracy, progress, and adherence to teaching standards.

    • Learning Center Directors observe tutoring sessions periodically and conduct formal performance evaluations annually.

    • Parent communication is ongoing to confirm satisfaction and identify any appropriate adjustments.

This multi-layered oversight ensures consistent, high-quality instruction across every tutor and subject area.

  • Tutors are evaluated through a combination of observation, documentation review, and client feedback:

    1. Direct Observations: Learning Center Directors periodically sit in on sessions and complete written evaluations.

    2. Session Note Review: Learning Center Directors check for thoroughness, grammar, professionalism, and instructional alignment.

    3. Parent and Student Feedback: Learning Center Directors follow up regularly with families to assess satisfaction and results.

    4. Annual Reviews: Tutors undergo a formal evaluation at least once per year, with results documented in their personnel file.

Tutors demonstrating excellence may be recognized with bonuses or expanded opportunities, while those requiring improvement receive targeted coaching and support.

  • Our online tutoring delivers the same personalized instruction, structure, and accountability as our in-person sessions.

Tutors follow identical instructional plans, session documentation requirements, and communication protocols. Students benefit from real-time feedback, screen sharing, digital whiteboards, and interactive tools that replicate the one-on-one connection of in-person learning.

Families who choose online tutoring often appreciate its flexibility — sessions can continue seamlessly even during travel, illness, or conflicts in regular scheduling.

  • We primarily conduct online sessions using Zoom.

  • Yes — with proper structure and engagement, online tutoring can be highly effective for younger learners.

Our tutors use a blend of visual aids, interactive exercises, and personalized pacing to maintain focus. Parents are encouraged to help with setup and supervision for younger children to ensure an uninterrupted learning environment.

Because each program is customized, tutors adapt methods and pacing to a child’s attention span and developmental level. Many families find that younger students respond well to short, high-energy online sessions with consistent scheduling and positive reinforcement.

We do ask that all cell phones/ipads are put into airplane mode and stored behind the student, in view of the student’s camera.

  • Engagement is central to our online model. Tutors use:

    • Screen sharing to work through problems collaboratively.

    • Interactive annotation tools to visualize steps in real time.

    • Short assessments and “check-ins” to keep students mentally active.

    • Gamified learning techniques for motivation and retention (especially with younger students).

    • Personalized materials aligned with the student’s school curriculum or goals.

Learning Center Directors and tutors regularly review session results to ensure that online engagement equals the effectiveness of in-person tutoring.

  • Families only need a reliable internet connection, a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, and access to the selected video-conferencing platform.

    For optimal results:

    • A quiet, well-lit study space is recommended.

    • Headphones help minimize distractions and improve audio quality.

    • Students should have access to any textbooks, assignments, or digital materials before each session.

    • Cell phones should be put into airplane mode and stored behind the student, in view of the camera.

Our administrative staff provides setup guidance before the first online lesson and can troubleshoot basic connectivity issues if needed.

  • Yes. Our Executive Function & Organization Coaching program is one of the most transformative services we offer — designed to help students build lifelong habits for academic success and independence.

We begin with multiple coaching meetings per week, allowing our team to work closely with each student to establish structure, accountability, and productive daily routines. As students demonstrate progress and consistency, we gradually reduce the frequency of meetings until full independence is achieved — the ultimate goal of the program.

Each coaching session includes a “backpack dump” — a structured review of all folders, binders, and materials to ensure the student’s system remains organized and up to date. Coaches then guide students through their course syllabi, helping them identify key deadlines, enter important dates into their digital calendars, and map out a clear, manageable plan for the academic term.

Some families also choose to schedule FaceTime or video check-ins between sessions, allowing our coaches to view the student’s at-home study space and offer practical organization advice. This holistic approach ensures the environment supports productivity, focus, and calm — key ingredients for long-term academic success.

Our executive function coaching is particularly effective for students who are capable but inconsistent, easily distracted, or chronically overwhelmed. With structure, mentorship, and accountability, students learn to take ownership of their learning — and parents often tell us the “homework battles” finally stop.

  • Absolutely. Many of our tutors are trained in techniques that help students manage test anxiety, perfectionism, and academic stress.

We emphasize preparation, practice under realistic test conditions, and mindset coaching to increase confidence and reduce performance anxiety. For standardized tests, tutors teach pacing and stress-reduction strategies to help students remain calm and focused throughout the exam.

  • Yes. Score At The Top offers enrichment programs for students seeking greater academic challenge beyond their school curriculum.

Our tutors design personalized learning plans that encourage advanced critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and higher-level content mastery. These programs may include independent study, accelerated coursework, or preparation for competitive academic programs and national exams.

We also offer honors, AP, and courses-for-credit options for motivated learners who wish to advance their studies under professional supervision.

  • Yes. We work extensively with homeschool and nontraditional learners. Our tutors can supplement an existing homeschool curriculum, design full academic programs, or administer credit-bearing courses through Score At The Top’s accredited private school, Score Academy.

Families may choose one-on-one instruction, small-group courses, or structured study halls for accountability and consistency. Our flexible scheduling allows homeschool students to pursue enrichment, complete core subjects, or prepare for college admissions while maintaining individualized pacing.
